About the MacConkey half medium:

MacConkey agar is a selective, differential and enumeration medium used to isolate gram negative bacteria.

In this medium, lactose-fermenting bacteria can be differentiated through the formation of pink colonies, of non-fermenting lactose bacteria, with formation of colorless colonies.
