Multichromatic staining technique developed by George Papanicolaou. Papanicolaou’s staining is used to differentiate cells in slides prepared from various body secretions.

The sample can be gynecological smear, sputum, lavage, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, abdominal fluid, pleural fluid, seminal fluid, tumors or other specimen preparations from a variety of bodily secretions.

It is a system for staining cells obtained by scraping natural cavities and cell concentrates from cavity spills, according to Papanicolaou.
